CryoPort (CYRX) continues to be in the headlines, and positively so. The latest came from favorable publicity on 60-Minutes...
As a testament to the ability of CryoPort's shipping container to maintain the integrity of biological material, 60 Minutes' recent story exposing the unethical practice of a rogue physician peddling what turned out to be dead stem cells for unproven treatments hinged on verification that the stem cells in question were maintained at cryogenic temperatures at all times during transport. To do this, the stem cells were shipped in CryoPort's container - per the 60 Minutes segment referring to CryoPort's container, "We had the cells sent by the highest medical standard".
The company also recently announced it will be increasing their line of deep frozen shipping containers with the introduction of the CryoPort Express high-volume dry vapor liquid nitrogen shipper, which will be able to accommodate much larger shipments of cryogenically frozen biological materials. This is a meaningful milestone and one that CryoPort had previously noted was something that they were working on (see our March 3, 2011 initiation report on CryoPort). Similar to their smaller containers, the new high-volume shipper is based on the company’s proprietary dry-vapor technology, and is also completely reusable and recyclable. The larger size will make it very cost-effective for transporting life science materials and provide the opportunity to broaden CryoPort's customer base to those with a need to ship larger specimen sizes. The initial, smaller containers hold 75 vials, while these new larger containers can hold up to 500 vials. As we have noted in the past, a larger container would potentially allow CryoPort to directly benefit from the expected surge in vaccine demand (and other biologics) over the coming years.
