Earnings roundup: Estee Lauder profit more than doubles, shares jump; trucker YRC posts loss

  • On 2:24 pm EDT, Friday October 30, 2009

Among the earnings stories for Friday, Oct. 30, from AP Financial News:

A strong relaunch of a skin-care line and better-than-expected sales at airport stores helped Estee Lauder Cos. more than double its fiscal first-quarter profit, the company said, but it remained cautious on the upcoming holiday season.

YRC Worldwide said it lost money in the third quarter, but the financially fragile trucking company is still working with lenders to stay out of bankruptcy.

Arch Coal Inc. said third-quarter profit plunged on lower coal prices, but the coal miner suggested that improving operating margins in all regions reflect an emerging turnaround in once-struggling coal markets.

Tim Hortons Inc. said its profit fell 22 percent in the third quarter as the restaurant operator coped with higher food costs and expenses tied to the reorganization of its Canadian business

Diversified energy company Black Hills Corp. said it fell to a third-quarter loss as continued low natural gas prices reduced its oil and gas and energy marketing income and lowered electric utility sales margins.

Paper and wood products company Domtar Corp. reported sharply higher third-quarter profit, helped by gains from a tax credit and the sale of property and equipment.

Penske Automotive Group said its third-quarter profit rose 16 percent, as sales spurred by the government's Cash for Clunkers program and lower expenses offset costs stemming from its failed effort to buy General Motors Co.'s Saturn brand.
