The U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) awarded a $453,000 grant to Shanghai Electric to evaluate the installation of the Carbon Limiting Improvement Process (CLIP) technology in coal-fired power plants. The feasibility study is intended to provide the technical basis for a demonstration project in Chinese power plants, which will enable carbon emission reductions of up to 7.5 million tons per year. The study is also expected to provide documentation and support the adaptation of CLIP at coal-fired electricity-producing power plants owned and operated by the holding company of the Grantee, the China Power Investment Corp., as well as the other major power generation companies in China, such as China Huaneng Group, China Datang Corp, China Guodian Corp and China Huadian Corp. The CLIP technology is provided by Coffey Coal Combustion Consultants (C^4), of Knoxville, TN.

“We are excited the USTDA and Chinese power plants are taking action to reduce GHG,” said Miles Mahoney, president and general manager of C-Lock. “Evergreen Energy will work ardently to support Shanghai Electric in the feasibility study. If the pilot project is adopted, each installation is anticipated to require a technology to measure and document GHG reductions to quantify emissions reductions. We believe GreenCert will be well positioned to fill that role.”

The grant was signed by USTDA Acting Director Zak and Chairman Zhou on behalf of the U.S. government and Shanghai Electric at the “20th Meeting of the U.S.-China Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade.” During this same meeting, the USTDA and China signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to promote the establishment of the U.S.-China Energy Cooperation Program (ECP). The ECP will focus on implementing clean energy solutions and is designed to leverage private sector resources for project development work, while at the same time advancing U.S. commercial interests in China.
