GOOSE CREEK, S.C., Oct. 7, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The sudden death of his wife on May 31, 2006 was a crushing blow to Author Steve Donovan, coming just seventeen days before their fiftieth wedding anniversary. The event severely tested his deeply rooted Catholic faith and unleashed a battle against the emotional demons of self pity and grief.

A Widower's Journey to Serenity is the enduring account of Donovan's struggle with the shock of his wife's death and sudden changes he had to live with. In his first year as a widower he prayed fervently to understand God's will for him. He sought help from his Catholic faith, from the twelve-step program of Alcoholics Anonymous, and from a grief therapy program for men and women who had lost a loved one.

With masterful, honest writing, the author recounts the struggle to maintain his faith amid the emotional forces of self pity and grief. He describes his efforts to carve out a new, normal life despite issues of aging and loneliness. His loving relationship with his wife will give readers a clear view of how blessed his life was for decades. Most of all, this book closely examines the author's search for serenity as well as his relationship with God. Filled with truth and emotions, this release will appeal to other widowed spouses as well as couples and devout Christians. About the Author

Steve Donovan had met his wife-to-be on a blind date at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill while attending graduate school. His wife worked on a masters in music after graduation from Tulane University and Steve on his masters in city and regional planning. He had graduated from Rutgers University and then had served two years as an army lieutenant in the Korean War. They were involved in their parish communities, Mary as an organist and the author as lector, and both had sung in church choirs. Their mutual love of classical music and their strong Catholic faith were binding forces throughout their long relationship. They and their three children were seen as a closely knit family. Donovan has been active in the AA correspondence program, writing to AA inmates in prisons. He maintains a rigorous exercise program and is a member of two seniors tennis teams. The Donovans had moved to Goose Creek, South Carolina from Fairfax, Virginia in 1997. Through his involvement in church, marriage encounter and the fellowship of AA, Steve Donovan had many friends who gave love and support to him in his journey to serenity during that difficult first year as a widower.
