TORONTO, ONTARIO--(MARKET WIRE)--Jan 5, 2009 -- Attention Editors: A photo is associated with this press release.
Filling up on holiday cheer throughout December, most Canadians stopped counting calories and dollars and abandoned themselves to the joys of the season. According to Amy Snider, Professional Home Economist, making up for holiday overload may be easier than most people think.
"Canadians will be able to put a bold checkmark next to the three most common New Year's resolutions by simply shifting the way they eat," said Snider. "By adding tofu to the weekly grocery list, Canadians can (one) reduce their cholesterol intake, (two) add proper nutrients to their diet such as iron and protein and (three) maintain their budget."
The plan Snider proposes is a simple one and it starts with breakfast. Enjoy a Sunrise Soya Peach Mango or Banana dessert tofu on its own or combine it with fresh fruit and juice, perfect when you are on the go. Or, use medium firm tofu instead of eggs in a breakfast scramble that can be wrapped in a whole wheat flour tortilla for portability. At lunchtime, toss flavoured tofu, sliced into cubes, into a veggie-rich salad. And, instead of take-out for dinner, make a homemade pizza with crumbled extra firm tofu instead of pepperoni slices. Using tofu as a topping instead of pepperoni will eliminate from the pizza a whopping 390 calories, 36g of fat and more than 2000mg of sodium.
Always a nutritious option, tofu is low in sodium, low in saturated fat, a source of calcium, and contains no cholesterol or transfat. Tofu is also a source of high quality protein, which means that it contains all nine of the essential amino acids that we require in our diet. A real time-saver, tofu can be heated and ready to serve faster than most meat products, shaving minutes off mealtime prep.
In addition to being a healthy choice, tofu also makes "cents" budget-wise. A 4 oz (125 g) serving of Sunrise Soya Extra Firm Tofu can cost as little as $0.80 compared to spending almost $3.00 for the same amount of chicken breast.
Tofu can be substituted in many recipes, not just everyday meat dishes. When experimenting with favourite recipes, home cooks can replace one whole egg with 1/4 cup of well-drained and mashed medium firm tofu or one cup of buttermilk with 1/2 cup of soft tofu blended with 1/3 cup of water and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice.
