PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Drug developer Mylan Inc. said Friday federal regulators have given final approval to an application to make a generic version of the heartburn drug Prilosec.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved an abbreviated new drug application for omeprazole delayed-release capsules, 40 mg, Mylan said in a statement.

The capsules are approved for the treatment of peptic ulcers and gastroesophageal reflux disease. Mylan said it would ship the drug immediately.

Prilosec is made by AstraZeneca PLC.

Mylan shares closed at $11.14 in trading Thursday.
