BRIDGEWATER, N.J. (AP) -- French drugmaker Sanofi-Aventis said Friday U.S. regulators approved its drug Elitek to treat complications from leukemia, lymphoma and other cancers in adults.
The Food and Drug Administration previously approved the drug for use in children in 2002.
The drug is designed to treat so-called tumor lysis syndrome, a buildup of byproducts from broken-down cells that usually occurs after cancer treatment. The disease often appears in patients receiving treatment for leukemia, lymphoma, and cancerous tumors.
Shares of Paris-based Sanofi-Aventis fell $1.81, or 4.5 percent, to close at $38.34.
