HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--MECA:

Multicultural Education and Counseling Through the Arts (MECA) celebrates The Day of the Dead with a FREE 2 day Festival, October 31 – November 1, 2009 11 AM to 6 PM at the Historic Dow School, 1900 Kane Street Houston, Texas 77007, in the heart of the Old Sixth Ward.

The festival is presented by GOYA Foods and will feature GOYA food and products. Goya prides itself in bringing traditional Latin American foods to the kitchens of families around the country.

MECA’s Day of the Dead Festival presented by GOYA includes an altar competition open to the community with the top three winners receiving CASH PRIZES. Any interested persons can contact MECA.

An outdoor stage sponsored by Centerpoint Energy will feature performances by artists and bands like The Jive Sisters, Kofu Daiko Drummers, Mariachi MECA, Grupo Vital, The Grass Skirts, Flamenco by Gabriela Tempestad, Houston Balalaika Society. The indoor stage will be sizzling with performers like Vantress Tillman as TinaTurner, Colombian Folk Dance, Ambassadors International Folkloric Dance Company and a calavera fashion show.

The MECA Day of the Dead Festival is sponsored in part by the Houston Arts Alliance, the City of Houston, the Texas Commission on the Arts, the Cullen Trust for the Performing Arts, and the United Way of Greater Houston.
