ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill., Sept. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Gorilla masks, country music stars, the Great Wall of China ... this can only mean the new Golden Tee update has arrived in bars and pubs around the country.
Every year, Incredible Technologies (IT) releases a much-anticipated new version of its record-breaking, pay-to-play video game. The goal: add enough twists, turns, and high-tech innovations to keep players hooked for another year.
"It's more than 'just an update,'" says game inventor Larry Hodgson. "It's our fountain of youth."
No kidding. As IT rolls out Golden Tee 2010, it's celebrating the game's 21st birthday. A milestone by any standard, it's unheard of in the fickle amusement industry, where games are lucky to last six months.
Even more impressive: Golden Tee has grossed nearly $3 billion to date, making it the most profitable game of all time.
Ten million players and fans can't wait to see what's new. Some yearly updates usher in big technological breakthroughs, like machines that accept credit cards or are compatible with HDTVs. Others launch innovative marketing moves, like awarding winners with cash prizes ($25 million to date) or enabling players to upload great shots to YouTube.
One element remains constant: with every update, IT introduces new virtual golf courses, courtesy of master designer Jim Zielinski. Players never know what's coming and this year, they'll find themselves playing outside Beijing, in the hills of Tuscany, on the shores of Tahiti, and beyond.
Okay, but what about the gorilla mask? Part of the fun for players is outfitting their in-game golfers. So besides featuring new, real, cutting-edge gear -- Callaway clubs and Top-Flite balls -- 2010 also includes tons of goofy accessories, like an arrow through the head and a baby blue tuxedo.
And there's more: the game now automatically updates a player's Facebook status every time they play, there's fresh commentary from CBS sportscaster Jim Nantz and PGA pro Peter Jacobsen, and a new Skins mode.
The game even has a new theme song, "It's Golden Tee," by country rocker Ira Dean. Formerly of Trick Pony, Dean -- a serious Golden Tee player -- has written hits for Montgomery Gentry, Smash Mouth, and Blues Traveler.
