CINCINNATI--(BUSINESS WIRE)--New Harmony Consolidated School from New Harmony, Ind., has been chosen to receive the 2009 Communities And Rural Education Service (CARES) Award from the National Rural Education Association and Great American Financial Resources, Inc.
The CARES Award recognizes outstanding efforts to build strong ties between rural school districts and the communities they serve. New Harmony Consolidated was awarded this honor for their work with community volunteers to restore and renovate the Ribeyre Gymnasium, a historic structure that anchors the downtown business district. To date, New Harmony students have established a non-profit organization, secured funding for the project, assisted in the external restoration and worked to renovate the building’s interior. Currently, the building serves as an active senior center and is an essential facility for community activities.
“When schools get involved with their local communities, the effects are widespread,” said Mathew T. Dutkiewicz, executive vice president for Great American Financial Resources. “New Harmony students are gaining valuable experience in establishing and operating a non-profit organization. At the same time, they are providing a much-needed community resource. These efforts are an excellent example for other schools across the country to follow.”
Great American Financial Resources will present the CARES Award and a $5,000 check to New Harmony representatives at the NREA National Convention on Oct. 9, 2009, in Cincinnati.
