BROOMFIELD, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--On October 4, Horizon Organic® milk and Silk® Soymilk will sponsor the annual Farm Aid concert aimed at raising funds for and celebrating America’s family farmers. Horizon Organic and Silk will also reduce the environmental impact of the concert’s power use along with artist and fan travel through the purchase of carbon offsets sourced from clean, domestic wind power.

"For seven years, we’ve supported Farm Aid because we believe in everything the organization does to help American family farmers," said Blaine McPeak, President, Horizon Organic and Silk. "Family farmers are central to the Horizon and Silk brands and we want to do all we can to ensure that they continue to have the means and ability to provide the nation with fresh, healthy, organic and natural food.”

Farm Aid’s mission is to build a vibrant family farm-centered system of agriculture in America. Farm Aid artists and board members Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp and Dave Matthews host the annual concert to raise funds to support Farm Aid’s work with family farmers and to inspire people to choose family-farmed food. Since 1985, Farm Aid has raised nearly $36 million to support programs that help farmers thrive, promote food from family farms, and build connections between farmers and consumers.

At the event, Horizon Organic will present the Franklin family of Bliss, N.Y., with the fourth annual Horizon Organic Producer Education (HOPE) Award. The Award, established to pay tribute to and congratulate farmers who demonstrate a long-term commitment to and passion for organic agriculture, acknowledges the strength of character, hard work, and resiliency required to own and operate a family-run, organic dairy farm.

During the same presentation, Horizon Organic will also recognize Jack and Cindy Perrin of Woodburn, Ore., as the winner of its annual Quality Award – an honor given to farmers who produce milk of the highest quality.

In keeping with Horizon Organic and Silk commitments to renewable energy, the brands have purchased enough wind energy offsets from the Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF) to match the carbon impacts of the energy used at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater on Oct. 4, including all of the Farm Aid music performances. In addition, the brands are offsetting an estimated 26,000 attendees driving to the venue and for each of the performing artists to travel to the venue with clean wind energy. Wind energy is an affordable domestic and renewable energy source that does not cause pollution, generate waste, or deplete natural resources. The BEF Carbon Offset purchase calculated for 26,000 attendees, estimating two people per vehicle, traveling from within 30 miles will result in a total of 390,000 miles offset.

Silk and Horizon Organic have also committed to sponsoring the use of recycling and composting bins so that the event approaches a zero waste status.
