WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Iconic songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, creators of Elvis Presley’s classic song Hound Dog and others American classics will sign copies of their autobiographical book, Hound Dog from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Barnes & Noble booth at the Eighth Annual West Hollywood Book Fair. The City of West Hollywood’s Eighth Annual West Hollywood Book Fair will take place on Sunday, October 4, 2009 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at West Hollywood Park, 647 North San Vicente Boulevard in West Hollywood.
Perhaps more than any other songwriters of their generation, Leiber and Stoller were among the most influential, shaping America’s musical landscape along with iconic artists such as Elvis, Ray Charles, Ben E. King, The Coasters, The Clovers and many others. Before their 20th birthdays, Leiber and Stoller had their first success with a song called Hard Times that became an R&B hit in 1952. They followed it with the classic song Kansas City, and then another bluesy composition, Hound Dog, originally written for Big Mama Thornton. A few years later Hound Dog would become a #1 record for Elvis Presley, and Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller became the King's favorite songwriters. They wrote such early Elvis hits as Jailhouse Rock, Treat Me Nice, and You're So Square (Baby I Don't Care). Leiber and Stoller had a string of hits with The Coasters, including Yakety Yak, Poison Ivy, and Charlie Brown. In a completely different genre, Leiber and Stoller wrote and produced the pop hit, Is That All There Is? for Peggy Lee. They also created the smash musical Smokey Joe's Café, which premiered in 1995 and became the longest-running musical revue in Broadway history. Leiber and Stoller were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1985 and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.
The West Hollywood Book Fair will feature stages with author panels, special guests, live performances, exhibitors and writing workshops. The West Hollywood Book Fair is one of Southern California's most eclectic literary events attracting readers and writers of all ages and interests.
