Opexa Therapeutics Inc. (Nasdaq:OPXA - News) is a biotechnology company that develops patient-specific cellular therapies to treat autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS) and diabetes. The Company's lead product candidate is Tovaxin(R), a novel T-cell vaccine for the treatment of MS specifically tailored to each patient's disease profile. The Company also has adult stem-cell technology in the preclinical development stage.

In the report, the analyst notes:

"On September 8, 2009, OPXA announced that analysis of data from its phase IIb study of Tovaxin showed that more than 83% of patients taking the drug for MS remained relapse free after a year. The announcement caused the Company's share price to more than triple to $5.66. OPXA also reported that the annualized relapse rate among MS patients taking its Tovaxin drug was 20%, 42% lower than relapse rates among patients taking a placebo. The next step in the development of Tovaxin is a phase III study, which is likely to be initiated in early 2010.

"On August 7, 2009, Novartis AG (NYSE:NVS - News) acquired OPXA's stem-cell technology, which was in early preclinical development. The Company received an initial payment of $3 million and will receive an additional $1 million technology transfer fee that is to be paid over the course of a six-month period. The initial payment, technology transfer fee, and development and commercial milestone payments could exceed $50 million not including royalties. OPXA will be able to receive royalty payments from the sale of any products resulting from the use of the technology and retains an option on certain manufacturing rights."
