GOP captures 2 governor races
Independents favored Republicans on Tue. as the GOP wrested political control from Dems in 2 states. Conservative Bob McDonnell's victory in the Va. governor's race and moderate Chris Christie's win in N.J. are triumphs for a party looking to rebuild after being booted from power in recent elections.
Maine voters rejected a state law that would allow same-sex couples to wed. But they approved medical marijuana. Dem Bill Owens captured a long GOP-held vacant 23rd Congressional District seat in N.Y., in a race that highlighted a divided GOP and illustrated hurdles it could face in capitalizing on any voter discontent with Dems next fall. Sens. John Kerry, D-Mass., Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., and Joseph Lieberman, I-Conn., announced that they would work to patch together a climate bill that could pass the Senate. A Supreme Court case had justices worried that letting people sue prosecutors who fabricate evidence to win convictions might chill other prosecutions -- even if those prosecutors are doing their jobs correctly and honestly.
