12 killed in Fort Hood shootings

Lt. Gen. Bob Cone said at a news conference that 1 shooter has been killed and 2 suspects were apprehended after gunmen killed 12 and wounded 31 during a shooting rampage at Fort Hood Army base in Texas. He said the suspects are all U.S. soldiers, and the primary shooter used 2 handguns in the attack. Pres. Obama decried the "horrific outburst of violence." It appeared to be the worst-ever mass shooting at a U.S. military base.

Ex-NYC Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik admitted in court that he lied to the Bush White House while being considered for chief of Homeland Security. Kerik, hailed as a hero after the 9/11 attack, was not required to plead guilty to the main corruption charges against him, according to the plea deal. He will be sentenced on Feb. 18. The House Judiciary Committee defied the Obama administration by voting to strip from the Patriot Act a tool for tracking non-U.S. citizens in terror probes and amend the anti-terrorism law to curb government surveillance and seizure powers. S.C.'s Supreme Court ruled that an ethics probe into Gov. Mark Sanford's travel must be made public, clearing the way for lawmakers considering impeachment to review a report on the investigation.
