BARCELONA, SPAIN--(MARKET WIRE)--Feb 16, 2009 -- Visitors to Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain will be able to see, talk to and play games with LTE users in Bonn, Germany over the world's first international end-to-end LTE connection. Nortel(1) (Toronto:NT.TO - News)(Other OTC:NRTLQ.PK - News) LTE infrastructure technology and LTE devices from LG Electronics(2) will be used to stream live video between the T-Mobile(2) booth at Mobile World Congress(2) and the company's headquarters in Bonn, Germany.
LTE is a next generation wireless technology that delivers
seamless mobile broadband connectivity making applications
like streaming HD Video, interactive gaming, and video conferencing
as accessible on mobile devices as they are at home or the
office. Using technology from Nortel and LG Electronics,
T-Mobile has set up an LTE trial network (video,
whitepaper)
in Bonn that tests the potential ability of LTE to deliver
this mobile broadband lifestyle under real world conditions.
Visitors to T-Mobile's booth at Mobile World Congress will
be able to view live streaming video originating from a
vehicle as it travels around Bonn carrying an LTE mobile
device.
For the past three months visitors to T-Mobile's headquarters
in Bonn have been able to look beyond the data speeds and
capacity to experience what the technology could bring to
real life communications T-Mobile is now bringing this experience
to Barcelona allowing visitors to their booth to interact
with users in Bonn over a mobile video connection and through
popular applications like multi-player gaming and social
networking. This is how future subscribers will use the
Next Generation Mobile Networks to interact with colleagues,
family and friends while on the go.
"Nortel technology is at the heart of many of today's most
important wireless innovations, and we continue to invest
in order to help our customers deliver the mobile broadband
experience of the future," said Richard Lowe, president
of Carrier Networks, Nortel. "As the trend towards Hyperconnectivity
continues, operators must prepare to meet rising demand
for a mobile Internet experience that supports bandwidth
intensive applications, like video, with the same quality
and reliability as fixed networks. T-Mobile's showcase and
our demonstrations at Mobile World Congress verify the capability
of Nortel's LTE technology to meet this demand in real world
conditions."
In addition to connecting T-Mobile's booth at Mobile World
Congress with the headquarters in Bonn, Nortel's LTE technology
will also power LTE demonstrations in LG Electronics' booth
and in Nortel's booth, both in hall 8 at the Fira. These
demonstrations will show the quality and reliability of
live video streamed over LTE with applications for video
surveillance and video conferencing. These networks operate
in the 2.6 GHz spectrum frequency.
Each of these demonstrations will make use of the world's
first LTE handset (user equipment) modem chip(2) developed
by LG Electronics. The chip is integrated into a small data
card that attaches to any USB port.
"LG Electronics has developed breakthrough technology that
brings us a major step closer to putting LTE in the hands
of consumers," said Dr. Jinsung Choi, vice president and
head of LG Electronics' Mobile Communication Technology
Research Lab. "People are increasingly using their mobile
phones to create, send and watch video, download music,
and browse the Internet. LG Electronics' LTE handset modem
chip is a key component for creating LTE devices like the
USB dongles being demonstrated at Mobile World Congress.
Such devices will allow people to take advantage of the
network speeds offered by LTE to do these things anytime,
anywhere."
