Officials celebrate W.Va. carbon capture project

Government, company officials celebrate carbon capture project at AEP plant in West Virginia

NEW HAVEN, W.Va. (AP) -- Company and government officials are celebrating the launch of a carbon capture project at American Electric Power's Mountaineer Plant in New Haven.

The $70 million demonstration project was formally commissioned Friday. It's designed to capture carbon dioxide from the plant's emissions and store it underground. AEP says at least 100,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide will be captured annually.

The utility is partnering on the project with Alstom, which developed the technology.

AEP Chairman Michael G. Morris said commercializing the technology is essential to a successful strategy to address climate change.

Gov. Joe Manchin and Sen. Jay Rockefeller also participated in Friday's event.
