Poll: German opposition party support at 3-year high as Merkel coalition squabbles over euro

BERLIN (AP) -- A new poll shows support for Germany's main opposition party is at its highest level in three years as the eurozone debt crisis causes the latest outbreak of public squabbling in Chancellor Angela Merkel's coalition. The poll for Stern magazine, published Wednesday, put support for the center-left Social Democrats at 29 percent.Their traditional allies, the Greens, polled 19 percent -- enough, if an election were called, for a combined majority in parliament.Support for Merkel's conservative Union bloc was down to 31 percent, and its junior coalition partner, the Free Democratic Party, was at just 4 percent. The next election is not scheduled until 2013, although could come earlier.
