ORLANDO, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Here at its TelcoTV 2009 booth (#425), RGB Networks, the leader in network video processing, is demonstrating how telecom carriers can use the advanced transcoding capabilities of its Video Multiprocessing Gateway (VMG) to deliver a full suite of standard definition and high definition (HD) programming, regardless of the format or bit rate, while simultaneously enabling additional revenue generating applications such as advanced advertising.

The VMG’s ability to transcode MPEG-2 programs into MPEG-4/H.264 – and vice versa – in real time is particularly relevant to telecom carriers who must convert the programming they receive into the MPEG-4/H.264 that their networks support. Conversely, transcoding is also important for carriers with MPEG-2-based networks as programmers are increasingly delivering their programming in MPEG-4/H.264. Unlike single channel transcoders, the VMG is capable of simultaneously transcoding hundreds of programs, which dramatically reduces the cost and complexity of converting entire channel line-ups.

“By integrating several capabilities, including transcoding and advanced ad insertion, RGB’s Video Multiprocessing Gateway enables the delivery of the highest quality IPTV services from a single platform, making it an ideal video processing solution for telecom carriers regardless of size or their access network,” said Sanjay Dhar, Director of Product Marketing for RGB Networks. “The VMG combines industry-leading stream processing capacity, advanced video processing functions and exceptional reliability in a modular architecture, making it a truly ‘all in one’ solution for carriers using either MPEG-2 or MPEG-4/H.264.”

In addition to their current service requirements, the VMG can also help telecom carriers deliver video to multiple screens as they – and their competitors – race to deliver their programming to TVs, PCs and mobile devices simultaneously. Implementing a multi-device service in a cost-effective and scalable manner has been elusive. The VMG addresses this challenge with its ability to transcode and process an unprecedented number of streams in real time, while simultaneously performing a number of other functions, including aggregation, grooming, replication, transrating and ad insertion, all within the same platform. This ultra-high-density, integrated approach of RGB’s content repurposing technology offers carriers a scalable solution, allowing multiple video processing functions to be applied to each stream in real time, as needed, to prepare the video for its intended receiving device.

About RGB’s Video Multiprocessing Gateway (VMG)

RGB’s carrier-class Video Multiprocessing Gateway is a complete MPEG-2 and MPEG-4/H.264 video processing solution that enables service providers to deliver high-quality digital and IP-based video services to their subscribers. The VMG can simultaneously perform a variety of critical video processing functions in a single, ultra-high-density platform, including: content aggregation, grooming channel line-ups, transrating program streams, inserting ads and transcoding. The VMG product family currently includes the VMG-6 and VMG-14 models, offering different capacity to meet varying needs. Both carrier-class platforms are fully redundant, ensuring maximum reliability, and offer easy, license-based upgrading and scalable, pay-as-you-grow expansion of services.

RGB’s VMG is a finalist for a 2009 TelcoTV Vision Award in the category of Innovations in Encoding.
