REDWOOD CITY, Calif. (AP) -- A unit of construction company Tutor Perini Corp. said Monday it has been awarded a contract to build phase one of a $733 million thin-film solar panel manufacturing facility in Fremont, Calif., for Solyndra Inc.
Financial terms of the contract weren't disclosed.
General contracting firm Rudolph and Sletten Inc. will build the first phase of Solyndra's Fab 2 plant, which will contain 609,000 square feet of manufacturing plant floor area, utility and support space, shipping and receiving and administrative and professional office areas.
The plant is designed to produce 500 megawatts per year and provide thousands of local jobs, according to Solyndra. Combined with the current Fab 1 facility, the output will exceed 600 megawatts per year. Over their lifetime, the two plants will produce enough solar panels to cut over 350 million metric tons of CO2 emissions, or 850 million barrels of oil, the company said.
Shares of Tutor Perini fell 21 cents to $20.04 in morning trading.
