SANTA BARBARA, Calif., Nov. 12, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Superconductor Technologies Inc. (Nasdaq:SCON - News) ("STI"), a world leader in the development and production of high temperature superconducting (HTS) materials and associated technologies, will present at the 2009 International Workshop on Coated Conductors for Applications (CCA09) in Barcelona on Nov. 23rd. Dr. Brian Moeckly, Director of Materials Research and Development at STI, was invited to discuss "HTS films grown by reactive coevaporation on simplified coated conductor IBAD-MgO templates for low cost manufacturing" in a paper jointly authored with Dr. Vladimir Matias of Los Alamos National Laboratory's (LANL) Superconductivity Technology Center.
"The US Department of Energy has identified 2G HTS wire as a potentially transformational technology for improving energy efficiency in the transmission and generation of electricity," stated Adam Shelton, STI's vice president, product management and marketing. "For 2G HTS wire to gain wide market acceptance, the price needs to be substantially reduced. Over the past 14 years we have developed a unique HTS thin film deposition process that lends itself to both scalability and low cost. Working with our world class partners GE Global Research and LANL, we are adapting our effective and controllable material deposition process for the production of HTS wire at a commercially viable cost. STI is excited to participate at CCA09 and contribute to advancing the development of second generation high-performance low-cost HTS coated conductors."
The overall goal of CCA2009 is to establish the basic coated conductor characteristics necessary for use in the fabrication of practical HTS devices, and to identify the most efficient and effective means to achieve them. At the workshop, the following topics will be discussed:
* HTS applications requirements for fault current limiters, cables, rotating machines, SMES, transformers, high field magnets, etc. * Challenges in long length scale-up of high performance coated conductors * Strategies towards low cost coated conductors * Effective approaches to enhance coated conductors performance * New visions for coated conductor applications
