Supercomputer maker Cray gets contract for $40M

Cray gets contract from Korea Meteorological Administration worth $40 million

SEATTLE (AP) -- Cray Inc. said Tuesday it received a contract valued at more than $40 million to provide the Korea Meteorological Administration with a next-generation supercomputer.

The South Korea-based KMA will receive storage and data management technology. KMA will use Cray's supercomputers to provide more accurate regional and global numerical model forecasts through the implementation of advanced data assimilation.

"Once completed, the Cray supercomputer at KMA will be the largest integrated solution for operational numerical weather prediction in the Asia Pacific region and one of the largest in the world," Cray Chief Executive Peter Ungaro said in a statement.

The Cray system will be delivered in two phases, with acceptance of both expected during the second half of 2010.

Shares of Cray rose 4 cents to $7.39 in morning trading.
