Select dividend plays have jumped ahead of the S&P 500 over the last month.

Investors frequently look to certain sectors for stable, long-term appreciation and healthy dividend payments. Over the last month, some of the most popular dividend stock segments have showed mixed returns, with selected players pushing ahead of the S&P 500 by a notable margin.

A look at tickerspy's top-yielding Index rankings shows that top segments are paying out more than 6% dividends on average. Of these high-yielding sectors, two in particular stand out for their equity appreciation over the last month.

The Healthcare REITs Index has pushed higher by 5.6% in the last month, with top performers gaining more than 10% for the period.

Omega Healthcare Investors (NYSE: OHI - News), Medical Properties Trust (NYSE: MPW - News), and LTC Properties (NYSE: LTC - News) are among the sector's leaders on a one-month basis. All three pay out more than 6% yields, with Medical Properties Trust dishing out a whopping 8.25% dividend.

REITs are a great place to earn big dividends because they benefit from a structure that allows them to distribute cash flows to shareholders in lieu of certain taxes.

Components of the Domestic Telecom Stocks Index don't have the advantage of tax loopholes, but luckily for investors, they pay big dividends anyway. The sector yields an average 6.3%, and it is currently outperforming the S&P by 140 basis points over the last month.

Smartphone wars between Apple's iPhone (NASDAQ: AAPL - News) and Motorola's (NYSE: MOT - News) Droid, which runs on Google's (NASDAQ: GOOG - News) Android operating system, have been the topic of much discussion in the telecom sector. The iPhone operates exclusively on AT&T's (NYSE: T - News) network in the U.S., while the Droid is exclusive to Verizon's (NYSE: VZ - News).

Over the last month, Verizon's stock has appreciated by 10%, nearly doubling AT&T's performance for the period. Meanwhile, both stocks pay out 6% dividend yields to investors.
