PORTLAND, OR--(MARKET WIRE)--Dec 3, 2008 -- Tripwire, the leading provider of configuration control and change auditing solutions, today announced an ongoing initiative to reduce the burden its operation poses on the environment, at the same time reducing the long-term costs of doing business. Tripwire's management team and an employee sustainability committee worked with BEST Business Center, a partnership of city and regional government programs and energy utilities that helps businesses identify opportunities to green their operations, to examine how every aspect of its operations can be made more sustainable.

"Tripwire is a forward-thinking company, and this initiative demonstrates that," Tripwire President and CEO Jim Johnson said. "Using sustainable materials and ensuring the company runs in a sustainable way makes environmental sense, and it makes good business sense as well."

In mid-November, the Portland-based company relocated to One Main Place, managed by CresaPartners and situated in downtown Portland. The new space is 20 percent larger than Tripwire's previous downtown location, and was unfinished before the move occurred, affording management the opportunity to outfit the space with sustainable building materials. These include carpet tiles and flooring made of recycled materials, as well as recyclable desks, panels, and whiteboards. The new location also features numerous large windows, making use of more natural light and decreasing the company's dependence on artificial light.

In addition to using greener building materials, an employee sustainability committee investigated ways the company's day-to-day operations could change in order to reduce the company's impact on the environment. Tripwire's employee cafeteria now features two ENERGY STAR® certified refrigerators and two dishwashers, as well as a soda fountain rather than a vending machine, discouraging uses of bottles and cans. The company now purchases biodegradable soaps and detergents, and employees are able to compost leftover foods in the kitchen, rather than throw them away, earning Tripwire recognition from Portland's Office of Sustainable Development for reducing waste and greenhouse gas emissions from landfills. Tripwire has long subsidized transit passes for employees, and offers bike parking and showering facilities for bike commuters as well -- and staying downtown, rather than moving to a less-central locale -- was a key component of ensuring employees had multiple sustainable commuting options. More than half of Tripwire's Oregon employees are currently enrolled in the mass transit reimbursement program.

Tripwire also now purchases renewable energy for its server room, which features new racks and a more efficient cooling system, and continues to investigate technologies that reduce the lab's carbon footprint. These include virtualization, which enables IT staff to run several servers using one single machine, which can dramatically reduce energy costs. Tripwire leads the IT security market in its partnership with VMware. This thought leadership can be seen in its blog, which addresses virtualization security issues and has been gradually virtualizing its own IT environment for several years.

"Sustainability is an ongoing process, not a matter of saying, 'We're green now,'" HR Specialist Barbara Salegio, who has driven the sustainability initiative, said. "There's always more you can do, and there are some things we may not be able to do -- but we'll keep investigating more and better ways to reduce our carbon footprint."
