U.Va. to Host Screening of Film, "HAZE," for Substance Abuse Awareness Week

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA--(MARKET WIRE)--Nov 17, 2008 -- The University of Virginia (U.Va.) will host a free screening of the film, "HAZE," on November 19, 2008, in conjunction with the campus' annual Substance Abuse Awareness Week. The screening will be held in Newcomb Hall Theatre at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. and will be open to U.Va. students and faculty as well as to the general public. The event is co-sponsored by the Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Team (ADAPT) peer educators, the Inter-Fraternity Council, the Inter-Sorority Council, the University Programs Council, and the Office of the Dean of Students - Center for Alcohol and Substance Abuse Education (CASE).

"HAZE" is a full-length documentary film that examines the issues surrounding the college drinking culture in America, including the death of college freshman Gordie Bailey, who died of alcohol poisoning following a fraternity initiation ceremony at the University of Colorado at Boulder in 2004.

The film is presented by The Gordie Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to providing young people with the skills to navigate the dangers of alcohol, binge drinking, peer pressure and hazing. "HAZE" was produced by Watt Imagination! and Leslie and Michael Lanahan, parents of Gordie Bailey and founders of The Gordie Foundation.

"As peer educators, we are dedicated to addressing the issues of alcohol and drug abuse at the University of Virginia," said Shana Wrobel, Substance Abuse Awareness Week coordinator and ADAPT member. "We hope that this free screening of the film, 'HAZE,' will aid in our mission to promote awareness, provide educational outreach, and serve as accessible resources for other students on the dangers of alcohol misuse."

Following the 7 p.m. screening, the ADAPT members will lead a question and answer session about the film using the "HAZE" facilitators guide, packaged with the "HAZE" DVD to help schools lead educational discussions of the issues in the film. They will also distribute educational materials including Gordie Foundation brochures with GordieCheck cards showing the signs of alcohol poisoning and informational handouts on alcohol misuse and hazing.
