Air France keeps long-haul flights during strike

Air France says over 85 percent of long-haul flights maintained despite strike Monday

PARIS (AP) -- Air France says it expects to maintain more than 85 percent of its long-haul flights and 80 percent of European flights when pilots, cabin crew and other personnel begin a four-day walkout Monday to protest a government labor reform.

The French airline did not say how many domestic flights it would have to cancel, and added that it may have to cancel some flights at the last minute. It is offering free rescheduling for passengers with tickets for travel Feb. 6-9.

Labor unions have called the strike to protest a bill in Parliament that would require air transport workers to give 48 hours' notice before striking, as is already the case for French railway employees.

Unions call the proposal an infringement of the right to strike.

As a retired union person, we always gave days or weeks notice of a possible strike. I believe that ANY union that simply shuts down ANY operation at a moments notice should be replaced. When the tail of the dog tries to stop the dog from wiggling its tail by killing the dog----, you get the picture. You can cut the tail off and life for the dog goes on.

I fly internationally 4-6 times per year, will never fly through Paris. On my last trip, I had 3 hours before my conneting flight in Paris and barely made it. No signs whatsoever about connecting terminals, they're so backwards. French who travel to US complain about long customs lines in US; but give me a break, in Paris you'll wait through at least three lines like that, first one just to check in your bag. Air France is terrible.

Having been in the Paris airport the only thing I can say is that its a zoo---the French airport workers don't give a #$%$-you are sort of on your own. Coming back out of Paris Air France went on strike---no one seemed to know why--just business as usual! The people in the information booth refused to talk to us because we didn't speak French, In fact they walked away from us.---

If you do not work a (60) hour work week without week-ends off you have the labor unions to thank. If your child is not working in a factory you have the labor unions to thank. If your employer provides medical insurance you have the labor unions to thank. If you are female who wants equal pay for equal work you have the labor unions to thank. If you have taken advantage of the Family and Medical Leave Act to take care of your newborn you have the labor unions to thank.

Note that the French unions are leaving the long-haul flights alone, as they did at least once before. At least they know that stranding foreign tourists would scare many folks off, decreasing the need for their positions.

Don't believe everything the right-wing kooks tell you. France, Germany are heavily unionized. They have a great standard of living, high productivity, and lots of other quality of life benefits that Americans do not, thanks to your unfriendly global corporations.

Drink some wine, smoke some more, and protest my ability to protest.

As usual, a person can't travel through France without the risk of some union striking and impacting travel. Happened like 3 or 4 times in 2011. I recommend we all just avoid France as a destination. Then when the airlines go under the unions can whine about layoffs.....

well no one strike at AA and the airline is going to fire 13 000 employees.......I will suggest you avoid traveling through the US too :)

Fire everyone that walked off. In this world economy you can find and hire replacements. Those that walked off should be black listed from being hire again. Other airlines should also have the option to never hire these walk outs again.

People have a right to strike, but they dont have a right to a job. Fire them all.

Right to strike but not a right to a job? What the heck does that mean? Why do you think there are strikes? Because they have a bad attitude? Your solution is a true example of Tea Party policies; bellyaching as usual with no facts to back your actions. Yea just Fire them, then the worlds problems will be solved and you can go scab for some company that would normally never hire you.

At least the French are reliable. If they don't run away, they go on strike.

unions are thug mobster parasites...too lazy to do the work of starting ones own company, they wait until someone works hard, then when the profits start, the unions are there to extort and fleece. unions are communists and it really wrong that they are swimming in taxpayers money. just wrong. most people are completely oblivious. one man steve walker takes a stand for us and the unionaires are covering him like a million big fat ticks. where are the taxpayers that are getting tax increases year after year? why arent all AMericans standing with steve walker, sherif Joe Arpaio, and the 4 states obama/dept of Nonjustice suing? what will it take? NDAA passed. our liberties are going down.
