Akamai Technologies names co-founder Leighton as its CEO

Associated Press

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) -- Akamai Technologies' co-founder Tom Leighton will become its CEO starting in 2013.

Leighton will succeed Paul Sagan, who previously announced that he would resign as CEO by the end of 2013. Sagan had served as CEO since 2005.

Both will keep their seats on the board and Sagan will become a senior advisor to help with the transition.

Akamai Technologies Inc., which helps websites deliver content, also promoted Robert Hughes to president of worldwide operations and Rick McConnell to president of products and development. Hughes and McConnell will report to Leighton.

Earlier this month Akamai announced that it would provide its services to AT&T Inc. customers, taking away the threat that AT&T would expand its competing service.

Akamai, based in Cambridge, Mass., closed at $38.96 Friday, less than a dollar off its all-time high.
