AkzoNobel presents inaugural North America Science Award


AMSTERDAM, THE NETHERLANDS--(Marketwired - Jun 7, 2013) - AkzoNobel's prestigious ScienceAward program officially honoured its firstNorth American recipient yesterday when Carnegie Mellon UniversityProfessorKrzysztof (Kris) Matyjaszewski, Ph.D. was recognized for his cutting-edgepolymer chemistry research.

Established in collaboration with the American Chemistry Society, the awardwaspresented at the end of the company's first ever North America InnovationConference, held at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago,Illinois.

Cited in scientific literature more than 50,000 times, ProfessorMatyjaszewski'smany achievements include the discovery of the atom radical transferpolymerization (ARTP) process. He received a $75,000 cash award and acertificate of recognition during the presentation ceremony.

First bestowed in the Netherlands in 1970, the AkzoNobel Science Award wasextended to Sweden in 1999. In order to reflect the increasingly globalnatureof the company, it was then extended to China in 2010, the UK in 2012 andNorthAmerica in 2013.

Last year, the company invested almost EUR400 million in research anddevelopment,two-thirds of which was focused purely on sustainability. AkzoNobel hasalso seta target whereby 20 percent of its innovations will provide distinctsustainability benefits for its customers and their value chains.

The company will next present its Science Award in Sweden later this year.
