Alaska Airlines retiring meal tray prayer cards

Alaska Airlines removing prayer cards from meal trays after 30 years as complaints increase

SEATTLE (AP) -- Alaska Airlines is ending decades of giving passengers prayer cards with their meals, saying Wednesday the decision was made out of respect for all passengers.

Airline spokeswoman Bobbie Egan said the airline heard from customers who preferred not to mix religion with transportation. The decision reflects respect for the diverse religious beliefs and cultural attitudes of Alaska Airlines' customers and employees, the company said in announcing the change.

"Some customers were comforted by the cards and some didn't feel religion was appropriate on the plane and preferred not to receive one," she said.

The cards began as a marketing ploy 30 years ago to differentiate the regional airline from its competitors. The company admits the idea was borrowed from another airline.

The cards offer a short except of a psalm from the Old Testament printed on a beautiful photograph. One current example includes this excerpt printed over a beach scene: "Give thanks to the Lord for He is good. His love endures forever."

A card with a mountain scene says, "I will be glad to rejoice in you; I will sing praise to your name O most high."

Since 2006, when the airline stopped offering meals to customers in the main cabin, the cards have only appeared on meal trays in first class.

For a long time, Alaska Airlines got more positive comments than negatives ones. But lately, opinion has shifted.

Egan said the decision was made out of respect for all of their customers.

"After carefully considering all sides, it was agreed that eliminating the cards was the right thing to do," Egan said.

The airline sent an email to its frequent flyers on Wednesday explaining the change that will take effect Feb. 1.

"Religious beliefs are deeply personal and sharing them with others is an individual choice," said the email signed by both airline CEO Bill Ayer and President Brad Tilden.

The email said some of its customers enjoyed the cards but others were offended by them.

"It is important that everyone know that this decision does not change our core values nor our care for our customers," the email said.

Patrick. You and I both know you'll never do that. Talk big, little man. I would love for you to try it on a plane I'm on, though. :-)

This is just another way of big companies getting rid of the saving grace of My savior Jesus Christ. Shame on all of you companies for taking this away. I fly many major airline over seas and will find another airline that still believes in the saving power of My Jesus. Shame shame shame on anyone that removes these.!

This is so sad that Sr. leaders would coward down to a few. The majority would like to keep the cards coming. Realize you acted hastily and keep the prayer cards coming. If certain people don't want to read it then let them NOT pick it up. How can that be offensive.

How sad! People who do not want them, should not take them, but the practice should not be ceased!

Like I said before about people (non-christians) not wanting to see, hear or witness ANYthing that has to do with God. This just #$%$ me off, why is it that these people ALWAYS get their way. Leave well enough alone, it has been going on for this airline for 30 years, if they don't like it they DON'T have to read it, give it back to the stewardist. You DO have FREE WILL! Oh well, God still loves you... whether you believe or not, I will pray for all those idiots! GET A LIFE!

Do you realize that your sarcastic comments that you will pray for us "idiots" showcase your own lack of reverence. I doubt that your god (if it existed) would appreciate being the bullet fired out of your petty little gun...

Bring one with you. It is offensive to people from a different religions or the ones that just don't believe. America is a free country right? Good decision.

Hey if people are offended by a prayer card, in which by the way brings peace and comfort.
Then I would say just simply hand it back or put it down, you don't have to read it,your own free will. No one forces anyone to do any thing. Just put it down No big deal

I'll bet you wouldn't have the same attitude if the card contained verses from the Qur'an.

Why does have to be given to me in the first place, did I ask for it?

You really have to be kidding..should we take the Gideon Bibles out of the hotel rooms? All us Christians should be sure to pray aloud before take-off and when meals are served. People who run around complaining about something like this evidently have nothing better to do. Get a life.

Yes, Gideon bibles should not be in hotel rooms. Unless Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, and all other fantasy books are added to the bedside table's drawer as well.

The love of Jesus is the only thing we should live for and what our actions in life are all about. All Christians need to speak of the love of Jesus. Think of how beautiful the world would be with all people living by the love of Christ. No war. No greed. We all need pray to be a joy that we all strive for. Pray should be a routine, a practice we are always receiving comfort from and delight in the anticipation of prayer in our every waking moment.

You know that is how satan works after all these years of passing out prayer cards speaking the word of the Lord now you have passengers who's complaining well it ain't like a gun was put to their head if it was bothering them that bad all they had to do was refuse or say no thanks, what about the passengers who love reading the word of the Lord while they eat i don't think it is fair to them and have anyone sat back and thought about it is he that is keeping you safe in the air and on the ground GOD is the name and it comes with religion for those who don't know him by his real name it is Jehovah.Thank you and God Bless You All
