Alcatel-Lucent's New MPR Units for Small-Cell Backhaul

Alcatel-Lucent(ALU) recently unveiled the novel microwave packet radio (:MPR) networking unit that will allow operators an easy and speedy deployment of advanced long-term evolution (:LTE) heterogeneous networks. MPR, designed for efficient outdoor usage, will significantly expand Alcatel-Lucent’s wireless mobile backhaul solutions and that too while saving on both power and costs.

LTE heterogeneous networks are a combination of small cell and macro networks designed to maximize network coverage while optimizing costs. Rising demand for high speed data from the users of advanced mobile devices like smartphones and tablets has made it necessary for operators to upgrade their networks. However, cost of upgrading the macro network is huge and as such demand for small cell solutions is increasing. Small cells are especially a boon for the high traffic areas as they are capable of substantially augmenting the existing network without major infrastructural changes.

A crucial challenge for small cell solution providers is to offer efficient wireless backhaul connectivity from small cell to macro network. As such, Alcatel-Lucent has been making persistent efforts to enhance its product portfolio and strengthen its position in the market.

Further, Alcatel-Lucent has included the Microwave Services Switch – Outdoor (MSS-O) – along with its 9500 MPR offerings to improve the backhaul connectivity. Apart from this, the 9500 MPR suite also includes a couple of new transceivers, the Microwave Packet Transceiver-Sub6 (MPT-Sub6) and Microwave Packet Transceiver-Gigabit Services (MPT-GS), to cater to a diverse range of frequencies. This will greatly augment the small-cell placement options for operators while also easing the process of deployment. To further enhance the frequency, the company has also been approaching other providers in the wireless backhaul domain.

This initiative comes as part of the company’s ‘The Shift Plan’, which is a strategy aimed at repositioning and establishing itself as the specialist of Internet Protocol (IP) and Cloud networking and ultra broadband fixed and mobile access.

This Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) company’s small-cell solutions have also been selected by other telecom majors like QUALCOMM Inc.(QCOM), Vodafone Group (VOD) and Verizon Communications Inc. (VZ) in the recent past.
