FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) -- Flight attendants and ground workers marched in picket lines Tuesday to protest American Airlines' plans to outsource jobs and cut pay and benefits under a bankruptcy reorganization.

Several of the protesters acknowledged having little hope of changing the company's course. Some said that they expect to be laid off soon.

There appeared to be 200 to 250 protesters at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. A few passengers disembarked from cars and rolled their bags into the international terminal while avoiding contact with the pickets.

The event was a reminder of the long and bitter divide between labor and management at American, the third-largest airline in America. There may also be differences — at least in style — among the workers themselves. The pilots' union skipped the protest, preferring to take a less confrontational approach.

American and its parent, AMR Corp., filed for bankruptcy protection on Nov. 29 after running up billions of dollars in losses over the past decade. Two weeks ago, AMR laid out a plan to cut 13,000 jobs, kill its pension plans, reduce benefits and make other changes such as longer hours for some of its 88,000 employees.

Under bankruptcy law, the company can try to negotiate new labor contracts with unions. If that fails, it can ask the bankruptcy judge to impose the company's plan.

"I don't think this is going to do anything to change management's opinion as far as our (contract negotiations), but it's something we can do to show support for each other," said Angelica Abrams, a Dallas-based flight attendant with 30 years at American.

Laura Glading, president of the Association of Professional Flight Attendants, also predicted that the company is determined to walk away from previous labor contracts. "We're here today to show we're not going to back down without a fight," she said.

American said the event didn't disrupt passengers at DFW, one of its five major U.S. hub airports.

Company spokesman Bruce Hicks said that restructuring American "is a difficult but necessary process." He said every employee group, including management, would be affected.

"Our goal is to exit as a growing, profitable company that preserves tens of thousands of jobs," Hicks said.

    Was on a AA flight to Asia a few years ago. While the flight attendents sat around reading the paper, the toilets were dirty and the service was bad. Will never fly AA again.

      Large sums of money were given up by ground employees to help the company survive. All management did was help themselves to that money in the form of bonuses................ Bonuses that were taken while the company supposedly was losing money.

    In 2003, American’s parent company, the AMR Corporation, managed to avoid a bankruptcy filing after its employees agreed to concessions that totaled around $1.8 billion ( $800 per month per Mechanic) and Management took huge bonuses the next day. In recent years, the airline has unsuccessfully sought new concessionary contracts

    These workers had a chance to wise up, the company was in trouble and one of the last airlines to not go bankrupt, the company asked you all to take pay cuts to avoid this now. You and your unions said NO. You are getting what you deserved. Sad, but thats the world now, you need to realize jobs for certain people pay less.

    This downsizing of America did not start with American airlines and will not end with American airlines either. We have been doing this since free trade and ronald reagan started it with global competition. Problem is it has not hit the colleges or the health care areas yet. Mostly because both of those entities have a support system in place. Colleges have student loan programs and grants, health care has shared expense in insurance. Best way to get both of these costs in line with the rest of America, remove the support systems.
    If both industries had to fly on their own with what people can pay, like American airlines then those industries would rapidly go thru this downsizing of salaries overnight.

      I am as anti-union as it gets, but I have close releatives who are teachers. It is my understanding that rank and file teachers are underpaid while school administrators, union officials, and lawyers on both sides are the ones making the money. One beneficial change to all public employee pension plans would be to convert them to defined contribution, 401k-style plans so that the people who are teaching the youth of this nation are motivated to gain a general understanding of capitalism and a detailed understanding of personal finance. Unfortunately, the union environment favors socialism where "Big Brother" is supposed to take care of us. The problem will always be that "Big Brother" takes care of himself first.

    I am not against workers rights, but come on, being a stewardess is not a 40 year career. Let the young kids do it for a while, then go get a real job. It was like when teachers were giving up their careers to work at disneyland. We fly to hawaii alot on American, OMG., the service is so bad it is painful. If your lifes dream is to pass out cokes, work at McDonalds.
