NEW YORK (AP) -- American Express Co. on Wednesday reported that the rate its customers defaulted on their cards fell again in January.

The New York-based company continues to have the lowest charge-off rate in the industry, mainly because its customer base is more affluent and because it maintains tight control on problem accounts.

Amex also reported that late payments remained steady for the month.

DEFAULT: American Express wrote off 2.2 percent of balances on an annualized basis for the month. That was down slightly from 2.3 percent of balances in December. The rate is well below the 3.8 percent charge-off rate a year ago.

LATE PAYMENTS: Payments on 1.4 percent of balances were delinquent, or late by 30 days or more, in January. That was unchanged from the prior month. The delinquency rate was 2.1 percent in January 2011.

PEAK RATES: Amex's worst month for charge-offs came in April 2009, when they hit 10.4 percent. Card companies typically write off loans after they are six months past due.

Delinquencies reached their highest point in February 2009 at 5.3 percent. The figure is an indicator for what to expect for defaults in coming months.

American Express shares slipped 30 cents to $51.66 in afternoon trading.

Why wouldn't it fall? Nobody has to pay their mortgages any more.

Less customers less default. Would never take this card. Have worked in retail and NO One wants to pay more to accept this thing.

Fine, they'll just lose the sale!

You are so foolish, I bet your other cards are maxed out.

Although some retailers won't take the card, it is the best card to have. Forces you to pay off the bill every month, no pre-set limit. We've had ours since 1993. They are also the very best at defending you if you have a problem with a company. Their Reward points are easily accessible and we have paid for alot of airline tickets with them. Most of the bankcards are #$%$ sucking bottom feeders, Capital One is one of the worst!

Not crazy about AE. Had one and sent in multiple payments monthly to pay off regularly. I ended up getting my account closed because of a reporting error on my credit report. They didn't even contact me to let me know they closed it. I wonder how many honest customers who pay their bills they ditched due to an unfounded fear of possible default. Oh, well.

I specifically use my AMEX card when I want to "punish" someone with the higher merchant fees. Whenever I have to pay Chicago traffic/parking tickets online, I am sure to use my AMEX card so that they pay a higher fee.

AMEX lost a huge amount of clients when they lost the One Pass deal. Everybody went to Chase, if their customer base is smaller, so is everything else going to be. Nothing new here but disguised media propaganda.

Yet more proof that the MEGArich are doing fine while the rest of us lose our homes, credit and jobs.

Amex is just hoping to get in on the Chase deal. Paid to "process" food stamps, child support and disability payments.

Your comment is off based. It has nothing to do with MEGArich. It has to do with living within your means regardless of financial status.

If obama is upset with people who earn over $250K a year, I am moving my income below it. I am no longer working. My family has become a one income family so we do not go MUCH above 250K.

Why would you do that? Do what most of us are doing, just cut back on other things. Do you need to go out to eat so much? Do you really need to buy an expensive car to show off with? Take one big vacation rather then a bunch of small ones. I own a business and my goal will be to raise my prices and lower my costs where I can to make up the additional costs. It am with you, it stinks to have a President that hates the upper middle class so much. He's not about taxing the rich, he's about pretending to do that will taxing you and me. But what can you do but do what you have to do and let the chips fall where they may. In other words, pass on your tax increases.
