"The goal of this video is to provide a comprehensive review of New Jersey's red-light safety camera programs," said ATS spokesperson Charles Territo. "This video takes a look at the process from intersection selection to violation processing."
Currently in use at nearly 60 intersections in 25 New Jersey municipalities, red-light safety cameras, are having a positive influence on traffic safety, according to annual reports published by the state Department of Transportation. At intersections with red-light safety cameras installed for one year, right-angle crashes decreased an average of 15 percent. In the second year, the average decrease was 86 percent. Over the same time period, the number of citations issued through the camera program also declined, indicating drivers are choosing to stop on red, instead of racing through the light and risking a dangerous right-angle crash.
Among the topics covered in the video is the state's approval process for installing red-light safety cameras. Viewers will also see how the camera system works, how violations are captured and processed, what safeguards are in place to ensure accurate processing, and the criteria police follow when deciding to issue a citation. Hot button issues are also covered, including yellow light timing and taxes, which are not used to pay for the cameras. How money from a paid ticket is distributed is also explained. In fact, tickets issued in a designated safe corridor generate funds that can be used to buy law enforcement patrol cars and computers, and can fund special spinal cord and autism research among other special items.
"Red-light safety camera programs are a lot more than just a camera on the corner," added Territo. "There is an extensive network of people, processes and safeguards behind every camera. This video walks viewers through the entire process. It's our hope that it will not only raise public awareness about the camera safety program and clear up some of the misinformation spread by camera opponents, but will also serve as a vital reminder to drivers everywhere to stop running red lights."
