Liberty is thrilled to announce that Andrew Ference will be attending the 2013 Brent Peterson Liberty Classic on August 26th at Northern Bear Golf Club. Ference will be attending in support of his former coach, Brent Peterson, who has Parkinson's disease himself.
Brent Peterson coached Ference to the 1998 Memorial Cup Championship with the Portland Winterhawks, along with Marian Hossa, Brenden Morrow and Josh Green. A former NHL player himself, Brent Peterson was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2005. Peterson documented his ongoing battle with Parkinson's disease as well as the effect it has had on both his coaching career and those around him in his autobiography "My Toughest Faceoff."
Born in Sherwood Park, Alberta, Andrew Ference was drafted by the Pittsburg Penguins in the 1997 NHL entry draft. Playing 13 NHL seasons, Ference recently signed a 4-year contract with the Edmonton Oilers. Not only a hockey player but also an environmentalist, Ference's work outside hockey is admirable, living an eco-friendly life. His dedication to sustainability is documented in the National Geographic Series "Beyond the Puck."
After winning the 2011 Stanley Cup, Andrew credited Brent Peterson as one of the major contributors to his success in the NHL. A humble player, Ference also credits Peterson for holding him accountable to himself, a valuable lesson for anyone. "Another coach of mine, Brent Peterson, had a simple piece of tape on a vanity mirror in our locker room. It read, "Can you be proud of yourself today?" What an amazing question! It did not ask if you had won or lost, whether you scored or not, just simply if you could be proud of what you had done that day."(1)
