Due to a lawsuit filed by Apple Inc. , a federal judge has ordered that Motorola Mobility Inc. and Google Inc. turn over information about their $12.5 billion merger. Google will also have to release details to Apple about its Android operating system.
U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Richard Posner in Chicago granted Apple’s motion for information on Monday. The iPhone and iPad maker claims Motorola products are in violation of its touch-screen patents. The WSJ reports, “Apple, the plaintiff in a 2010 smartphone patent suit against Motorola, sought the documentation earlier this month. The request represents one effort in a wide-ranging battle among mobile device makers using intellectual property for legal and competitive advantage.”
Don’t Miss: Does Admiration Lead to Higher Stock Returns?
In a move expected to further distance itself from competitors such as Amazon Inc. and Microsoft Corp. , Apple is holding a special event tomorrow in San Francisco. Last week, the tech giant sent the press invitations to an event on March 7 where the company has promised to reveal “something you really have to see and touch.” Many are expecting some form of a new iPad to be unveiled. Expectations are running high that the new iPad will be called something along the lines of iPad HD. Apple’s latest iPad is expected to show off an extremely high resolution retinal display screen running at 2048 by 1536 pixels, making the iPad HD the only tablet to support 1080p high-definition at its full resolution (1920 by 1080).
The new iPad may also be capable of operating on a high-speed 4G LTE, or Long-Term Evolution network. The 4G network is around 10 times faster than current 3G technology, and could give Verizon and AT&T a revenue boost. “It’s going to dramatically improve video consumption,” said UBS analyst John Hodulik. “This is the device people want. They want the fastest speed. They want high resolution.” Apple shares declined slightly in morning trading, but are still up 31 percent year-to-date.
