Apple up ahead of earnings; Abercrombie drops sexy; Silicon Valley cyber security

A funny thing happened on the way to new records on Wall Street--  a bit of a sell-off!

Both the S&P 500 (^GSPC) and Nasdaq (^IXIC) were on pace to add to Friday's all-time highs in the morning but then turned around about lunchtime.  Yahoo Finance Senior Columnist Michael Santoli says investors just weren't that excited about these market peaks.

"We didn't address these new highs with that much energy," he notes.  "We didn't have a huge surge of enthusiasm behind them."

Apple (AAPL) shares remain strong...continuing to gain ground ahead of the company's earnings report out after the close of trading today.

Abercrombie & Fitch (ANF) shares struggling after a spike earlier this morning.  This following reports the clothing chain will no longer feature "sexualized marketing," and they will stop the use of shirtless models at store events.

It has been a bad week for those in the for-profit college business.  Corinthian Colleges (COCO) is closing all its schools, after it was accused of falsifying its finances and job placement rates.  Also, Bill Clinton reportedly is terminating his honorary chancellor role with Laureate Education, one of the largest for-profit colleges in the country.

And the White House and the Pentagon pushing Silicon Valley to take on cybersecurity and hackers, saying techies need to focus less on creating the next hot app and more on online safety. This comes as Tesla Motors' (TSLA) website and Twitter (TWTR) feed were hacked this weekend.
