Backers of Ariz. sales tax initiative to file suit

Sales tax initiative backers to challenge Arizona Secretary of State's disqualification

PHOENIX (AP) -- Supporters of a 1-cent sales tax initiative are challenging the Arizona Secretary of State's decision to disqualify it from the November ballot.

The Quality Education and Jobs campaign filed a lawsuit Wednesday in Maricopa County Superior Court, asking for a review of nearly 291,000 voter signatures.

Secretary Ken Bennett says the language on the initiative circulated to voters didn't match the version pre-filed with his office.

Campaign chairwoman Ann-Eve Pedersen says the group filed the correct copy electronically and complied with all requirements of the state Constitution. They have retained a former Arizona Supreme Court justice to represent them.

Revenue from the tax would be directed to education, health care and other state services.

The increase would take effect after a previously approved temporary increase expires in mid-2013.
