    Barack Obama's Marionette Economy

    Fantasy Finance

Bruce Yandle is an economist at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University and the dean emeritus of the Clemson College of Business and Behavioral Sciences.

According to Friday's Commerce Department report, the economy improved slightly during the last quarter, but more importantly, we now have an estimate for 2011's overall economic growth, and it does not look pretty. The number is a dismal 1.7 percent, which looks even worse when compared with 2010's 3.0 percent. But we should keep in mind that some serious 2011 shocks pushed the growth numbers lower. There was magnified tax and regulatory uncertainty in Washington, a massive Japanese earthquake which caused supply interruptions, southern European credit meltdowns, a trembling Euro community, and the first-ever modern U.S. credit downgrade, which all pushed the numbers lower.

In 2012, experts and politicians will continue to focus on how to boost economic growth. We received more than a glimmer of President Obama's plan last week when he outlined his ideas for top-down management of the economy. The president offered a blueprint for a marionette economy, with the strings pulled by Washington.

[See a collection of political cartoons on the economy.]

This blueprint recommended tax punishments for firms that expand globally, tax benefits for firms that employ people in hard-pressed regions, research and development benefits for firms that attempt to produce the right stuff, fine-tuned rules to support clean energy, and higher taxes on individuals that earn a million or more dollars a year. There was even a mandate to require school aged children to stay in school till age 18 or else. Each proposed nudge seems designed to appeal to one or another special interest group, because special interest appeals help elect presidents.

But pulling strings in an effort to manage the economy just doesn't work. The United States' mangled market economy operates on the basis of the uncoordinated actions taken by millions of people in pursuit of happiness. Those decisions can and will be affected by tax changes and regulations, but we cannot build the economy of our dreams by simply sitting in a room and planning it. As the president pointed out, it is true that American manufacturing is surging again, and that employment is growing in industries that were mainly expanding abroad. But that growth in manufacturing employment will not rescue millions of unemployed American workers. There is just too little labor used in manufacturing today, and it's decreasing due to amazing advances in technology.

[Read the U.S. News debate: Is a Flat Tax a Good Idea?]

The president's focus on higher education may offer a better option for reducing unemployment. If we are going to subsidize the sector, it makes more sense to fund community colleges that can fill the growing need for technically trained workers. But in helping students along the way, it doesn't make sense to micro-manage the student loan process. Doing that will encourage the creation of more debt than those future workers can pay off.

With hope riding high for a stronger 2012 economy, treating the economy like a Washington-directed marionette is not the way to go. It is time for the puppeteers to back off the stage, clear the way and give free people a chance to show what they can do when tax and regulatory burdens are low and opportunity is high.

When a public school teacher is paid $75k for 9 months average plus pension and heath care benefits and the average tax payer makes $40k a year with no pension and pays toward there heath care the tax payer ends up bankrupt and can,t pay there mortgage.

Wait until Obama starts spending his billion dollars. Not only that, he's got a lot of lying to do if he's going to convince enough fools to reelect him.

He's up to it!..the lying, that is.

It was the fools that elected this totally unqualified, unvetted and unknown candidate the first time. Now those of us that have a brain have to work hard to convince these fools that enough is enough and it is time for a change.

For the first TWO YEARS of his pestilence, Pres. Downgrade had the Senate and the House. The economy was already reeling from the Barney, Fannie & Freddie fiasco derived from the clinton years (yes, the same Fannie & Freddie that Bush wanted to reform but was voted down by the Tard of Shitcago) (Yes, the same Tard that said raising the debt ceiling was unpatriotic, which we didn't know he meant that the raise WASN'T ENOUGH to suit his spending & give-away habits). When did "O" start working on jobs & economy... after the republicans took the House. The cries and whining from the democRats and purfessur marx started about two months after the fall of the House. They started crying, "Obstructionists", and blaming no new jobs on the republicans.
O is just a pandering, narcissistic, sociopathic liar bent oon getting his reelection through whatever means is necessary...He will give General Motors to the unions, he will give amnesty to illegals, he will give free healthcare to illegals, he will promise free tuition to all public universities, he will promise, he will promise, he will promise, and he will promise...
Think, before you vote for this pandering Alinsky styled, marxist/trotskyte.....

I still have a job because the democrats acted. Your republican do nothings tried to tank the country because they want the top government job back. Republicans are good at winning elections, but suck at governing.

.Does Romney's 'I'm Not Concerned About the Very Poor' Line Matter?

Nope....it only matters to those that don't listen to the other half of the sentence.

Have we come to discussing really stupid matters these days. Everyone says there is fairness in the media. I don't see it here. I really loved my local media TV showing him saying that part of the sentence and cutting him off even before he finished saying 'Poor'. What a laugh, and sad at the very least. The rest of the story is that it will be taken care of and if it isn't he'll see to it. End of story.

Btw, I would have put this comment on the article, but it somehow isn't available for any more comments today.

This should matter whether you listen to the whole sentence or not , the Republican have been removing the safe net for years for the less privilege, under a capitalist like Romney that safe net will be going by his 2nd year in the white house and that money will be used for the trickle down theory that has never worked. This is why we have such a big dispersed in wealth in this country today.

    • CRASHMAN  •  3 months ago
A few facts: Since Mr. Obama took office: (1) There are at least 1 million more unemployed in the US; (2) The government reported unemployment rate is up 9%; (3) Gas prices are up over 80%; (4) The Federal Debt is up over 40%; (5) The misery index is up over 50%; (6) College tuition cost is up 25%; (7) Worker Health Insurance cost is up 23% (wait till the Health Care Takeover idiocy kicks in completely in a few years and this number will skyrocket.); (8) The number of people receiving food stamps is at an all time record high of 46 million people, up by 14 million people; (9) There are more than 6 million more Americans in poverty; and, (10) Home values are down 13%. The US needs more of President Obama's solutions and economic prowess like it needs to be completely destroyed.

      "Growth will be 1.7%"
      There is no recovery.
A handful of jobs at Wal-Mart, and some jobs in healthcare (of course, because we have an aging population), and some programming jobs doesn't mean that America is on the right track. Obama will use the virtually meaningless jobs report to tout that he is doing a good job, when in reality, he has made things worse than when Bush was in office.
Vote Conservative in 2012, and rid the country of this fool and his minions.

Seriously, if you put your political biases aside, and just look at the resume, would you really choose a guy to run our economy "top down" who has never run a business, never had to hire someone (and make those tough choices), never had to fire someone, never been responsible for producing a profit, and has never held a real job himself? If you are truthful with yourself, you'd have to answer 'no'.

Common sense will show you that liberalism does not work. Look at the two most liberal states. California and Illinois; the two most financially unsound and broke states in the union. Now lets look at the cities:
      TEN POOREST U.S. CITIES
City, State, % of People Below the Poverty Level
      1. Detroit , MI 42.5%
      2. Buffalo , NY 39.9%
      3. Cincinnati , OH 37.8%
      4. Cleveland , OH 37.0%
      5. Miami , FL 36.9%
      6. St. Louis , MO 36.8%
      7. Chicago , Ill 36.4%
      8. Milwaukee , WI 36.2%
      9. Philadelphia , PA 35.1%
      10. Newark , NJ 34.2%
      U.S. Census Bureau, 2010

What do the top ten cities (over 250,000) with the highest poverty rate all have in common?
Detroit, MI (1st on the poverty rate list) hasn't elected a Republican mayor since 1961.
Buffalo, NY (2nd) hasn't elected a Republican mayor since 1954.
      Cincinnati , OH (3rd) hasn't elected a Republican mayor since 1984.
      Cleveland , OH (4th) hasn't elected a Republican mayor since 1989.
Miami, FL (5th) has never had a Republican mayor.
      St. Louis , MO (6th) hasn't elected a Republican mayor since 1949.
Chicago , Ill (7th) has never had a Republican mayor.
      Milwaukee , WI (8th) hasn't elected a Republican mayor since 1908.
      Philadelphia , PA (9th) hasn't elected a Republican mayor since 1952.
      Newark , NJ (10th) hasn't elected a Republican mayor since 1907.atitis supports

Obama has no clue, and would not understand this article if read to him aloud, I think he actually believes that top down government control is what moves the economy, he has lived his whole life in a small little circle of left wing nuts, and never ventured out, what we are seeing now is a want to be socialist, creating policies that are more facsist in nature, this is not good.
    • clearthinker  •  3 months ago
Obama's only agenda is to get reelcted so that he can continue his "fundamental changing" of America. Most of the people who actually want his kind of "fundamental change" are anti-Christian liberals who believe that the government should take care of them without having to put in an honest week's work for the rest of their lives.

Manufacturing jobs create wealth for the country and local economies. There is also the...Job Multiplier Effect...For each manufacturing job gained, you get 1.5 to 2.7 jobs in the economy. So, a relatively quick way to grow the economy is through manufacturing. Trouble is...People do not just sit around for years and suddenly decide to build a new plant. Understand, China offers terrific economic development incentives for locating manufacturing in their country. Why? They want to create wealth. Usually, costs are somewhat competitive, regardless of the country where the plant is located (example...Chinese workers are paid much less. However, US workers are ten times more productive.) Often, the decision to locate the plant is based on those economic incentives. Interestingly, the USA does not even offer such incentives. We are not even in the game. States, however, do offer bucket loads of business incentives. That is one major reason you have seen foreign auto plants located in the old Confederacy. Texas, as an example, has offices in California and go after every manufacture that wills speak with them offering financial incentives, lower labor costs, free land, to relocate or locate businesses.

"The president's focus on higher education may offer a better option for reducing unemployment"

I suppose so... students cannot be counted in the unemployment figures. Very good Dr Goebbels/Obama
