Best Buy Shoppers Find Black Friday Deals Unreliable

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Best Buy may be responsible for some empty stockings this holiday season.

The consumer electronics retailer is dropping the ball on some Black Friday orders, with shoppers complaining they have received e-mails over the past week from the company saying their orders have been canceled.

"We had ordered and received confirmation for a Holiday Bundle from Best Buy's Web site. We received a confirmation on the purchase and an expected shipping date," says Scott Mitchell of Ridgefield, Conn. "On Thursday of this past week we received an e-mail informing us that the order was being canceled."

Best Buy's online customer service forum has become a hub for shoppers complaining of similar situations.

"I placed two orders for the Fujifilm AX-350 on Black Friday for $50 each. They have been back ordered up until today, one week before Christmas and now they are cancelled. I called up to inquire and they stated that there was nothing that they could do," Jcar posted. "This is ridiculous that Best Buy waited until this late in the season to cancel the order and offers nothing in return. Now I need to try and find something to replace these items. Poor customer service, especially considering that I spent over $250 on other orders. Don't think I will shop here again.

    >Best Buy CEO Should Be Fired in 2012: Poll

It does look like Best Buy is attempting to rectify some of these issues.

Mitchell received an e-mail yesterday evening after several attempts at contacting Best Buy's customer service: "I realize the cancellation of your order was absolutely untimely and I can understand why you would be upset...Upon pulling up your records here it is evident that you have been an exceptional customer of ours over the years and I we truly do appreciate that. Although we value every customer and will go to great lengths to gain and retain their business, your level loyalty does earn special consideration when unfortunate circumstances such as these arise."

Best Buy is offering Mitchell a gift card to go toward a replacement, but is not offering an outright replacement of the same bundle and the gift card would not be received until after Christmas.

Best Buy e-mailed this statement regarding the problem: "Due to overwhelming demand of hot product offerings on BestBuy.com during the November and December time period, we have encountered a situation that has affected redemption of some of our customers' online orders. We are very sorry for the inconvenience this has caused and we have notified the affected customers."

But this doesn't seem to be a new problem for Best Buy. Brad Wilson, who runs the deals site Bradsdeal.com and BlackFriday2011.com, says the company is not reliable to deliver on great deals.

"We have come to expect something like this when they promote aggressively," Wilson said.

Best Buy was particularly aggressive when it came to Black Friday discounts and promotions this year after dropping the ball in 2010.

The company's door-buster deals, which rivaled that of discount giants like Amazon, Wal-Mart and Target, were praised by analysts, who expected these sales coupled with midnight Black Friday opening to propel third-quarter results.

But Best Buy failed to deliver to investors as well, reporting last week a 29% plunge in third-quarter earnings, with gross margin falling by a percentage point.

The discounts ultimately pressured the bottom line and did little in the way of revenue, with same-store sales up just 0.3%.

Best Buy shares were up 1.8% to $22.97 in afternoon trades. Year-to-date, the stock has lost more than 30%.

Oops, perhaps on those "Game on, Santa!" commercials they should warn consumers that Santa might be the better choice as far as confirmed deliveries go...

I worked at Best Buy for 8 years. It has gotten worse every year since I have been there. Left there recently because I was tired of their horrible business practices. They over promise and under deliver on everything. I now do majority of my shopping online. Plus they treat you like criminals at the door when they search you after every shift, but when corporate came in they could leave with out being searched. I find the management to be young and best buy may not be commissioned, but a lot of the lies and greed are driven by monthly bonuses. Take it from me. I worked there. They are out to take every penny from you and when something wrong happens with your order they put their arms up and say,"too bad". Steer clear from Best Buy. It is time for this store to follow circuit city's footsteps.

I haven't shopped at Best Buy in over 2 years due to their absurd return policy. I will never shop there again. Needless to say, I don't have any problems with cancelled orders.

Best Buy can go the way of Circuit City as far as I am concerned. Also the "Game on, Santa" commercials, I hate them.

Best Buy has had a terrible reputation and terrible customer service for years. I don't know why anyone still shops there. I quit shopping there 14 years ago for those same reasons. I have no intention of ever shopping there agian. They truely don't care. Wake up people, they aren't the only place to buy products. Anyone that continues to shop at Best Buy must be a glutton for punishment.

BLACK FRIDAY DISASTER IN FAYETTEVILLE, NC...I also had the Exact same thing done to my Black Friday orders at Best Buy... I placed the order for a Laptop, Paid for the merchandise and receivd a confirmation on the order and got email stating they had to cancel my order I could not get the item because they didn't have any more and there was nothing they could do after they had my payment on hold and could not be released until 7-10 business day. I ordered another Laptop that states was available , I even check online to make sure that It was available .. of course it was just like the last one. paid again so now Best buy had at 800.00 dollars of my money on hold , the computer said I could pick up my order on 12/6 I call online customer services tjust to make sure before I left work to go to thestore to pick up my order, they said no maam its its showing in our system that tht computer is now on backorder until 12/8, upset again I begin to explain what happen previously with the lst and 2nd computers and now you tell me this one is on backorder after I had to call and inquire about picking it up the same day, no email at all this time to give me an updated status. I decided to wait until the 12/8 because the representative assured me that I would be able to pick up my merchandise on 12/8 . Needless to say to say on the 12/8 I called Best Busy online again inquiring if it was ok to go and pick up my merchandise that I had already paid for and again I was told by customer service that my product is still not available and that it is still on backorder and she didn't know when the product would be available for me to pick up. Frustrated and upset because although I had no hope of getting a product I have paid for and confirm to get Best buy still had my money on hold . I had to cancel my order due to the fact that customer service could not tell me if and when I was going to be able to receive my product or if It would be before christmas. I am a very dissatified customer and very skeptical now more than ever about the so called Black Friday Deals or is it just a scam. It happened to me also Fayetteville NC also.

Best Buy is the worst store ever, but people keep shopping there to save $10. Even after they are screwed out of $100's they still go back to be treated like s&%t and screwed yet again because BB says they are a few bucks cheaper on an item. I say fool them once shame on BB; fool them 30 times then the idiots deserve to shop at Worst Buy.

Yes the "Game on, Santa!" commercials are very off putting. Christmas is supposed to of all things be about giving, joy, miracles and magic. Terrible marketing on their part.

It's called bait and switch .. they lure you in with unbelievable pricing, tell you it's back ordered and then cancel your order knowing you'll buy something else more expensive to fill the Christmas stocking. It's time to shut this loser company down!
