Here’s the Best Frozen Pizza

Is there anything Consumer Reports doesn’t review? No, not really.

The magazine just reviewed more than 20 individual-sized frozen pizza products to determine the best frozen pizza. They tested cheese, pepperoni, and chicken pizzas. Of course, best is subjective — but CR reports on taste, nutrition, and price per ounce. Here’s what they found:

  • Red Baron Singles (both cheese and pepperoni) were rated Best Buys, costing 26 or 27 cents per ounce and delivering great taste, “with a pastrylike crust and slightly spicy sauce.” Home Run Inn was rated very good, and the cheese version was declared tastier than fresh cheese pizza from Domino’s or Pizza Hut. But it costs more, at 37 or 38 cents per ounce depending on the variety.

  • CR tested five chicken pizzas, but only recommends one: Freschetta Chicken Club . “It has a flavorful, yeasty, Italian-style crust; béchamel-style sauce; smoky bacon; and flavorful chicken chunks; plus fresh-tasting spinach and tomatoes,” CR says.

  • Regarding nutrition, CR says recent research found that ”pizza appears to be the single biggest contributor of sodium to the diet of Americans 6 to 19 years old between 2003 and 2008.” That said, it ranks Trader Giotto’s Bambino Formaggio and Lean Cuisine’s Culinary Collection Traditional , both cheese pizzas, as very good on the nutrition scale.

  • Some pizzas cost up to five times as much as others. Amy’s Single Serve cheese pizza was the priciest, at 75 cents per ounce. It was ranked good on nutrition and very good on taste.

I don’t eat frozen pizza often, but I do occasionally grab a DiGiorno’s stuffed crust when it’s on sale for $5, so I was happy to see that it merited a very good for taste. What’s your favorite frozen pizza? Did it score well? Let us know on Facebook.
