The Guggenheim Solar ETF (TAN - News) and the Market Vectors Solar Energy ETF (KWT - News) were the top-performing funds yesterday, rising 6.67 percent and 6.04 percent, respectively. First Solar, a large holding of both funds, decided not to close a plant in Germany due to increased demand.

Also, First Solar plans to add two plants in Australia in the near future. All these factors helped the Arizona-based company’s stock jump close to 15 percent during yesterday’s trading session, according to Investors.com .

The PowerShares India Portfolio (PIN - News) also made the top 10 1-day performers list, returning 3.69 percent, as investors take positions ahead of a possible interest rate cut by India’s central bank. However, PIN still remains below longer-term moving averages.

The overall gains in the U.S. stock market helped support equities funds as well. The Dow Jones industrial average ended yesterday’s trading session up 162.57 points, or 1.31 percent, recovering from the losses seen on Monday. The gains came even amid signs that with bond yields rising in Italy and Spain, the eurozone’s debt crisis continues to threaten global economic stability.

Investor nervousness related to Europe could be seen in the Market Vectors Junior Gold Miners (GDXJ - News), which returned 3.53 percent, according to data compiled by IndexUniverse.

Bottom Performers

Single-country ETFs dominated the worst 10 1-day performers list yesterday, led by the Market Vectors Russia Small-Cap ETF (RSXJ - News), which lost 2.60 percent.

Also, the Global X FTSE Argentina 20 ETF (ARGT - News) dropped 2.55 percent, the First Trust Canada AlphaDex Fund (FCAN - News) lost 2.12 percent and the iShares MSCI United Kingdom Small Cap Index Fund (EWUS - News) fell by 1.53 percent.

Consistent with troubles in the eurozone, the WisdomTree Euro Debt Fund (EU - News) shed 2.40 percent.

Rounding out the worst-performing funds were the Teucrium Corn Fund (CORN - News) and the PowerShares Global Nuclear Energy Portfolio (PKN - News), which lost 1.66 percent and 1.63 percent, respectively.

A number of volatility-related ETPs also made it onto the bottom performers list. Such securities routinely move sharply in the opposite direction of the stock market.
