The db-X MSCI Brazil Currency-Hedged Equity Fund (DBBR) was one of two Brazil-linked ETFs to rank among the day’s top-performing funds on Friday, July 27, following a government decision there to help fund smaller Brazilian banks.
DBBR climbed 6.7 percent on the day, while the Global X Brazil Consumer ETF (BRAQ) tagged on gains of 4.7 percent.
A three-digit rally in the U.S. stock market also helped buoy equities funds across the board. The upward momentum was fueled by expectations that the European central bank would take measures to protect the euro, and that quantitative easing might not be far off for the U.S. market either.
The Dow Jones industrial average rose Friday 187.73 points, ending the day 1.5 percent higher at 13,075.66. It was the benchmark’s first close above 13,000 since early May.
Europe-focused ETFs such as the iShares MSCI Spain Index Fund (EWP) and the iShares MSCI Italy Index Fund (EWI) were strong performers, gaining 6.1 percent and 4.8 percent, respectively.
On the flip side, natural gas funds felt the heat and gave up ground on Friday. The Teucrium Natural Gas Fund (NAGS) gave back 7.15 percent on the day, while the United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG) bled 1.88 percent.
Long-dated Treasury strategies were also bottom performers, as Treasury prices fell. The Vanguard Extended Duration Treasury ETF (EDV) dropped 2.7 percent Friday, while the $3.7 billion iShares Barclays 20+ Year Treasury Bond Fund (TLT) slipped 1.88 percent on the day.
