The Global X China Materials ETF (CHIM - News) was yesterday’s top-performing fund, returning 11.57 percent, a major reversal for a fund that was one of the worst-performing ETFs last Friday.
In total, five of the top-performing funds on Tuesday were China ETFs, as investors regained hopes that Europe, the top destination for Chinese exports, would avert a major economic crisis.
Investors also appeared to be hanging some of their hopes on the potential for Chinese policymakers to take new steps to stimulate growth for the world’s second-biggest economy.
The Global X FTSE Greece 20 ETF (GREK - News) also experienced a major turnaround, returning 6.05 percent, as investors drew reassurance from polls suggesting pro-eurozone Greek political parties may prevail in upcoming elections.
Worst Performers
The Elements Credit Suisse Global Warming ETN (GWO - News) was meanwhile the worst-performing exchange-traded product yesterday, falling 11.63 percent.
It was the latest setback for a fund that has been dropping precipitously in the past year. The ETN, which tracks an index of companies oriented around reducing the impact of global warming, is a casualty of cutbacks in alternative-energy investment.
The No. 2 fund on the bottom-performers list was the C-Tracks Exchange Traded Notes on the Citi Volatility (CVOL - News), which had 8.05 percent in losses.
CVOL was one of four volatility-related funds dominating the bottom-performers list yesterday. Such securities—considered “portfolio insurance” among sophisticated investors—generally oscillate between sweeping gains and losses, often within the space of a week.
The ETRACS CMCI Livestock Total Return ETN (UBC - News) was No. 3 on the list, with 6.16 percent in losses, an indication of what some analysts see as a coming slowdown in commodities demand.
