The United States Natural Gas Fund (UNG - News) topped IndexUniverse’s best-performing ETFs list yesterday, gaining 14.97 percent, as gas-related ETFs recovered from recent losses, in part because investors are anticipating monetary stimulus from the Federal Reserve to help stimulate the economy.
The Global X FTSE Greece 20 ETF (GREK - News) rebounded as well, holding the No. 2 spot, with returns of 12.5 percent during yesterday’s trading session. GREK has been a mainstay of our best- and worst-performers lists in recent weeks as Greece remains at the center of the eurozone’s troubles. The country is holding widely anticipated parliamentary elections this Sunday, June 17.
Renewed talk of a third round of quantitative easing by the Fed—so-called QE3—helped fuel a nearly 156-point, or 1.2 percent surge in the Dow Jones industrial average yesterday. Still, financial markets have become exceedingly volatile in the past several weeks as Greece’s membership in the eurozone hangs in the balance. Sunday’s elections there should provide some clarity on Greece’s fate.
The iPath Global Carbon ETN (GRN - News) and the iShares Dow Jones U.S. Home Construction fund (ITB - News) were also among yesterday’s best-performing ETPs, gaining 6.69 percent and 3.35 percent, respectively.
Bottom Performers
Volatility-linked ETPs, which move inversely to the market, composed most of IndexUniverse’s worst-performers list.
It was led by the C-Tracks Citi Volatility Index ETN (CVOL - News), which shed 6.73 percent yesterday.
The Teucrium Sugar Fund (CANE - News) lost 2.72 percent on Thursday, followed closely by the actively managed Columbia Large-Cap Growth Strategy (RWG - News), which lost 2.22 percent.
