Best/Worst Daily ETF Returns: FCG Jumps 5.26%

The First Trust ISE-Revere Natural Gas ETF (FCG - News) was the best-performing ETF yesterday, gaining 5.26 percent and leading a pack of energy-related funds up, as the beaten-up sector benefited from a wave of buying on the heels of supportive macroeconomic data.

Coming into the session yesterday, the energy industry was the only one out of the S'P’s 10 sectors to be in the red for 2012 -- off nearly 7 percent year-to-date, according to Marketwatch data. The weakness is thanks to a continuous decline in oil prices that’s been linked to concerns about flagging aggregate demand in the face of slow growth prospects around the globe.

Concerns about the eurozone’s debt crisis hampering U.S. growth, and a slower Chinese economy have dented energy prices. On Wednesday, however, crude oil futures rose 15 cents to $79.36 a barrel after a weekly U.S. supply report showed a drop in inventories. More good news showing an increase in home sales in May and better U.S. demand for goods helped pump up oil prices.

The Dow Jones industrial average tagged on gains of 92.34 points to end the day 0.7 percent higher at 12,627.01.

A pair of PowerShares energy-linked funds was also strong performers, with the PowerShares S'P SmallCap Energy Fund (PSCE - News) rising 4.5 percent and the PowerSHares Dynamic Oil ' Gas Services Portfolio (PXJ - News) gaining 3.4 percent on the day.

All in all, six of the 10 best-performing ETFs were focused on the energy sector.

Commodities funds such as the PowerSHares DB Agriculture Long ETN (AGF - News) were also in the mix. AGF returned 4.5 percent yesterday.

On the flip side, platinum and palladium funds were some of the worst performers Wednesday.

The ETFS Physical Palladium ETF (PALL - News) shed 3.2 percent and the iPath Dow Jones-UBS Platinum Total Return ETN (PGM - News) lost 1.6 percent of its  value.

The iPath Dow Jones-UBS Coffee Total Return ETN (JO - News) – the best-performing fund the day before – gave back some of its gains yesterday, dropped 1.26 percent on the day.
