After months of speculation, Research in Motion is ready to launch its long-awaited BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 on February 21.

Hot Feature: Twitter and Apple Amp Up Their Partnership

The new mobile OS will integrate native email, calendar, and contacts features into the tablet, an area in which it has until now been sorely lacking, forcing users to find workarounds like connecting their BlackBerry phones to their tablets.

The new release will also enable social media fans to easily access their Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn accounts.

In addition, PlayBook OS 2.0 will also allow support some Android apps  , according to CNET.

One missing feature noticeably missing in the update is BlackBerry Messenger. But don’t worry, it will still be usable through Bridge, which will get its 2.0 release before or on February 21

Bridge 2.0 will add an array of new features, including one for remote control that Research in Motion demonstrated at CES 2012.

The company hasn’t commented on the news but the projected February release date comes from previous corporate announcements.

Long awaited by whom, the less than 1 million or so already disappointed Playbook owners? only to be disappointed again in that Playbook 2.0 cannot run BBM and cannot connect to BES directly?

If Rim is serious in becoming a good company, it should drop all its horribly toxic culture and mindset, and bring back the good talents.

Rim has lost two major battles due to mis-strategies in delivering the Playbook 2.0. Firstly, Rim's strategy in catering to the tablet craze leaving out the calendar, email and contact commodity features in the Playbook tying it to the Blackberry is now a lost effort. Secondly, Rim is losing out the only feature that still lures some BB users, namely BBM, and native BES connection.

The Playbook 2.0 is inferior to the Kindle Fire in that PB 2.0 needs an Android Player plus conversion for apps to run on it, whereas Kindle Fire is cheaper and does a lot more than the PB 2.0, also, the PB 2.0 is again an incomplete, still half baked product that is misguided, misjudged, and has no clear audience and quite apparently no one would want. The Rim PB 2.0 is another DOA from Rim, just like the first one labeled so by Steve Jobs. My question is, why is this Rim DOA 2.0 taken so long?

You are the only misguided here. There is no Android player on the PlayBook. Your referencing leaked information from over 4 months ago. Android alps may be ported to the PlayBook and future BB10 devices using the tools provided by RIM. It can't get any easier than that to understand.

PlayBook sales up 10% last quarter in Canada and iPad down almost 20% same quarter. No matter what the reason, these are the numbers.

It is now amply clear that Rim has turned every stone, ran all options, and is settling in due course to certain demise without the next 3 to 6 quarters due to horrendous financial quarterly performances.

Considering the Tablet market is just over a year old, expecting a company to retreat from this product is just plain silly.

The Playbook is slowly but surely gaining traction, partly due to the low price but also due to the outstanding design. With these new on-board features, the value proposition only get better. Remember, Playbook has always had this functionality through the Bridge software, 2.0 will only make the device attractive to non-Blackberry owners.

While there has been much reported regarding the Playbook's poor launch, RIM is clearly taking a longer term view on this technology.

The Rim Playbook series ranks in the lower quadrant among tablets. Overall, there are at least 40 tablets that are superior to the Rim Playbook series, mainly, why use the oddball QNX microkernel which is used in niche AC devices such as in-car stereos, even nuclear reactors (read Sendai nuclear reactor). QNX is missing 90% of a complete operating system requiring gargantuan additional design, coding, and testing for each machine to be workable. This is why Rim is so wrong depending on this QNX, Rim simply does not have the resources nor the expertise for QNX, and the BB OS is a piece of junk slapped together full of bugs, extremely crippled and inflexible, every time Rim made changes to BB OS, tons of bugs and issues surfaced. Rim is surely going to fail as a business entity even without the already gargantuan and fierce competitions.

Can't wait for this update to finally bury all the other tablets!!!The bridge is NOT a work around. Its a great feature for those who have #$%$ granted no good for those who don't.The multi-tasking on this tablet by far surpasses any "multi-tasking" on other tablets. If you haven't used it, don't comment. QNX is already used throughout the world in nuclear plants, automobiles, hospitals etc. due to its extreme reliability. What other platform can duplicate it?
