WICHITA, Kan. (AP) -- The Boeing Co. has told its employees that it plans to close its massive defense plant in Wichita by the end of 2013 in a bid to cut costs in a tight market for defense spending.

Wednesday's announcement means the loss of 2,100 well-paying jobs at its Kansas facility, which was once considered the centerpiece of Wichita's claim as the air capital of the world.

It also dashes hopes for an additional 7,500 direct and indirect jobs that the company once promised to bring to Wichita with the Air Force air refueling tanker contract.

The work will move to Boeing facilities in Texas, Oklahoma and Washington.

Job reductions at the Wichita facility are scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2012.

So, up goes the Foreclosure rate for that area, Starbucks will close, as will Walmart, Target, 2 McDonalds, and taxes will rise? There is a pattern.
    • P.O.M. 4 months ago
Perhaps Target but not Walmart...they be to big now. Don't see
how starbucks is even in the running in so far as coffee is concerned, that stuff stinks, literally!

good, get rid of China's biggest importers and get back to small family businesses that can survive in smaller economy's
    • D. 4 months ago
Uh, Ex Exec. You never were an exec if you made decisions for your own company based upon the effects on peripheral companies like Starbucks. What a fake you are. Taxes will rise is probably true. Parasites in government loathe to actually have to find a real job when the tax revenue dries up.

Boeing just won a 3.48 Billion defense contract?
    • ROBW. 4 months ago
Yes, for Missiles, etc, and another $35 Billion Tanker deal

      Yeah, for their union buddies.
    • Carthaginian 4 months ago
Boeing just got their Union Flunkies in Washington, including Der Fuhrer, to illegally change the rules to the competition three times in order to ensure that a superior product built at a lower cost would not be selected, then fatally underbid and has virtually doubled the unit price of each aircraft.

If you call that 'winning' then I guess they did.
  • Life Happens  •  4 months ago
If that was my job, I would be moving with them just to keep employment in this hard economy and no work climate.
    • Susan 4 months ago
Except that they are not offerring employment to those that would move. All the aircraft companies here are cutting. Hawker Beech in Wichita laid off over 200 workers ON VETERANS DAY. Yep. Happy Veteran's Day to all of us. The aircraft industry is not the place to be, but then it seems like there is no security anywhere, no matter what the industry.

Ever notice that parasite public employees NEVER move to another area for a job? All the public employees do is whine and snivel and the criminal bureaucrats scheme to manipulate companies to do what ever it takes to keep parasite public employees on the job.

If we keep spending money on bombs and planes....the only nail in the coffin will be a massive depression. The USA will a NEVER be taken over by another country, yet we have the military budget to fight two wars and pretend they can do it.

Yep. Good point Joe. The Nazi government of America has one main function in the world today. Nope. Its not taking care of us. Its playing world cop. WARS. Lots of WARS. So the parasite army of public employees can pretend to have jobs that mean something when they are really not jobs at all.

For every one of 2,100 well-paying jobs at its Kansas facility, 4 others in the 'private' sector will lose theirs. This is a lose-lose situation.

Well, at least The job market is booming according to Yahoo news a couple days ago, and unemployment is down according to the same. They should have no problems finding a new job. It only took me 20 months when the US Government paid my company to move to India. I'm only making 1/3 of what I was, but I'm just glad to be back on the taxpayer rolls. Just makes it all worthwhile....

Didn't they just get a government contract for $3.2 billion?
  • Mary R  •  4 months ago
Catch 22 - we want the spending to stop - we seem to be of the belief that govt spending has direct impact to the government only. America - you can't have your cake and eat it too! My condolences to the people losing their jobs.

Both of my parents worked for Boeing at Wichita and the Cape in the late fifties and early sixties. Boeing was a huge part of their lives. If they were still here, they would be sad!!!

I hope they offer options to their Wichita employees to move to the other 3 states. It's a change, but at least there's continuity.
  • e w  •  4 months ago
At least Boeing is an American company. How about cutting the Haliburton contracts, as they're no longer an American company---their headquarters is in Dubai...........
It should be a law that only American companies paying American taxes to American workers can be used by any government project---local, state OR federal.

  • dave  •  4 months ago
They just sealed a 7.48 Billion dollar missile deal and another 35 Billion dollar contract for Air Force Tankers with the govt. By the way, this is the SAME plant that they told the Feds they would provide 7500 direct and indirect jobs to if they got the tanker contract. Boeing needs to repay all monies they were given as an incentive to have that plant open this year and until they lock the door. Breach of contract with the town as far as I'm concerned.
