BOSTON, Aug. 25, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- A lot can change in three years but some things remain the same, like the city of Boston providing a warm welcome to fourteen of the world's best cliff divers as they descended from 90 feet atop the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) for the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series today. About a hundred boats, a few barges and plenty of Bostonians cheered on the triple pikes, twists, and flying dives of some of the purest athletes in the world as their bodies reached speeds of up to 50 mph in three seconds.
The day wasn't without intense competition with consistency and veteran strength securing all three top spots. Ten time World Champion Orlando Duque took first place, Russia's Artem Silchenko securing second and UK's Gary Hunt coming from behind to lock down third. In a whirlwind week for Duque, which started with a heli dive in front of the Statue of Liberty on Monday, then continued with a full moon dive in Greece and finally concluding with an epic win in Boston, his first win in 2013.
"It was a crazy week that started with one of the coolest things I've done in my life and ended with the best competition I've had the whole year," said the Colombian Diver Duque. "It was super close all the way up to the last dive and everyone was diving so well that anybody could have won."
Winning dives this year included a back triple somersault plus triple twist pike with little to no splash by Orlando Duque and a backwards handstand leading to a two and half somersault with a two twist ending in a free position by Artem Silchenko. Americans David Colturi and Steven LoBue also didn't disappoint their hordes of home country fans with final round appearances and six and seventh place finishes.
Returning as a judge for the 2013 season, American diving legend and Olympic gold medal winner Greg Louganis was excited to see the experienced divers take on bigger challenges and nail them in Boston.
The next stop on the tour is South Wales in the UK, where Gary will be heading home and looking to regain a winning title. Then onto Rio de Janeiro and the final stop in Thailand in late October.
