SAO PAULO (AP) -- Brazil's government has privatized operations at three of the nation's main airports as air travel booms ahead of the 2014 World Cup.
The government awarded concessions totaling $14 billion to three consortiums comprised of Brazilian companies partnering with those from Argentina, South Africa and France.
One concession covers Sao Paulo's international airport, the nation's busiest. Others include operations in the capital of Brasilia and the city of Campinas.
Brazil's airports are notoriously overcrowded and poorly maintained. Improving the airports is one of the main challenges the nation faces before hosting football's premiere event in 2014.
But it's also needed to meet domestic demand, which tripled in the last decade.
