NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Brookdale Senior Living Inc. said Monday that its non-executive chairman has stepped down and named a current member of the board to replace him.

Wesley Edens will remain a member of Brookdale's board, the company said. Edens, 50, had been chairman since Brookdale's formation.

The appointment of Jeffrey Leeds was effective Friday. He has served as a member of the Nashville, Tenn.-based company's board and chairman of the company's audit committee since 2005.

Leeds, 66, most recently served as executive vice president and chief financial officer of GreenPoint Financial Corp. and GreenPoint Bank. He retired from that company in 2004 after holding those jobs since 1999. Leeds previously served as GreenPoint's executive vice president for finance and senior vice president and treasurer, Brookdale said.

Brookdale shares rose 26 cents to close at $18.
